Nolini Kanta Gupta

Considered to be Sri Aurobindo’s ‘manasputra,’ Nolini Kanta Gupta was a revolutionary, linguist, scholar, critic, poet, philosopher and yogi, and the most senior of Sri Aurobindo’s disciples. He was among those arrested in May 1908 for conspiracy in the Alipore bomb case. After his acquittal in May 1909 due to lack of evidence, he worked as a sub-editor for the Dharma and the Karmayogin, two of Sri Aurobindo’s Nationalist weekly journals, in 1909 and 1910. He was among the four disciples who followed Sri Aurobindo to Pondicherry in 1910. In 1926 he settled permanently at Pondicherry serving Sri Aurobindo and the Mother as Secretary of the newly-formed Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and later as the founder-trustee of the Ashram Trust. He was taught Greek, Latin, French and Italian by Sri Aurobindo himself and went on to author more than fifty books in Bengali, thirty in English and five in French.
